The NHS Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there is an "unusual risk" for counterfeit inhalers, which could cause the wrong medicine to be prescribed to patients.
"If you are using the same inhaler in a different brand name and you buy this medication at the same time, it could be harmful," the MHRA said.
The MHRA said patients should be aware of the risks and seek advice from a healthcare professional if they have any concerns about the medicine.
It also said the product is unlikely to contain the wrong ingredients.
The MHRA said: "We are committed to ensuring all consumers are advised of the potential risks associated with using counterfeit inhalers and any advice they may provide to local enforcement authorities is thoroughly reviewed by the MHRA's regulatory authority."
The MHRA said it is working with the Department of Health to ensure that counterfeit inhalers are removed and to ensure that the safety of patients remains a top priority.
It said: "The MHRA is working with the Department of Health and other regulatory authorities in the UK to ensure that all medicines available on the NHS are regulated appropriately and to minimise the risk of harmful products being introduced into our healthcare system which could result in a number of health issues, including potentially dangerous medication interactions and adverse events. For example, many people may be unaware of the harmful side effects of certain medicines which could be associated with their use."
A spokeswoman for the British Lung Association said: "Patients and healthcare providers need to be aware of the potential risks associated with using counterfeit inhalers and the importance of following appropriate health advice for their patients."
She said: "We urge consumers to seek advice from a healthcare professional before using any inhaler or other device that contains any of the products above mentioned. These products should only be used under the guidance of a licensed healthcare professional and not the manufacturer."
The MHRA said it would respond to reports of counterfeit inhalers and recommend a range of alternatives.
